Post by merchant seaman » Sat Feb 11, 2012 7:25 pm

Are there many Yanks in Udon this year for Cobra Gold? Does anyone if the VFW i selling cobra gold ballcaps? One company I worked for carried gear for the US Marines and made a few trips into Pattaya for Cobra Gold. Just maybe we can keep this topic civil

This is a serious question but do they always go by Cobra Gold or does it change each time? I only ask as I bumped into a couple of them last year that asked me for directions, I ended up walking with them for a bit and I asked them if they were part of Cobra Gold but they used a different name, I just can't remember what it was.

What is this cobra gold? Sounds like a brand of beer but I'm guessing it's not.
Thanks.

Cobra Gold is a nation wide exercise... although the Navy's' do use Pattaya as a base.... Lots of other places as well... including Udon... Korat... (Army - Air Force - Navy - Marines)

Cobra Gold is the overall name, different phases have different names, such as "Freedom Banner". It's a bit more then a military exercise very political, location of Thailand is stratigiclly important to the U.S. They use this exercise a one way of contributing money into Thailand and military aid under disguise.

there is the yearly cobra gold exercise, consisting of USA, Thai, Singapore, and probably a couple others that escape my memory.....but also the occasional added exercise, with different names.
