Cost of living, monthly expense, plus

Post by UdornLA » Wed Oct 28, 2009 1:16 am

ok, continuing with this thread, either here or from another active informative forum, with a one time twist, cost of a CC vacation. we've done monthly expenses, which i will continue to contribute to, as i think one of the more important thread for those considering udon as a retirement destination. this post, if already here or thinking about once here, what is the cost for a quick inexpensive out and about. since i am a obsessive numbers freak, well, i'm here to help.... hope this goes over well.

Text removed by self, as now considered irrelevant to post and i'm long winded enough.

Out and about just recently, Oct 4 to 26, mere 3 weeks, keeping decent track of finances and expenses. Final check was counting funds before and after. Amazingly, only a less than 400 baht discrepancy, unaccounted expenses from that watermelon or water I forgot to jot down.

I’m a CC at times, but I do require safe, clean, hw, ac when out and about, if staying a few days, a pools is always nice, unless next to the beach, then nature’s pool will usually fit the bill.

The numbers, total expenses, just shy of 35000 baht, 21 nights/22 days, 3625 kms driven, basically a slow ride to phuket, 6 nights there, and slow ride back. Averaging less than 1700 baht a day, inclusive of all expenses, and a couple extras.

Hotels………………..15,800
Food………………...11,743
Petrol………………….7,160
TTL necessities..34,703

Misc…………………..1,977
Misc would be me/dvd’s 700, me/meds 450, still nursing that damn sore throat, taxes/tolls 95, non food/think bleach and brush to clean flip flops, 72 baht……………………………
And, you ready for this, not one tea money stop, though did manage to sneak by 3 of them, to busy to notice or care. Sadly, 2 were between KK and Udon, 1 between udon and NK, besides the official one. All those kms, and money stops are here. Same as last trip, 3 times as much driving, and one stop, here. Misc included, as sh*t does happen, so a couple thousand baht should be extra. If a shopping spree included, well, the sky is the limit. But this is a CC holiday, and I’m not a heavy drinker, maybe 6 lg leo’s, and half a bottle of bailey’s the whole outing.

Not mentioned is Ree went shopping one day, 5000 baht, but nothing to do with holiday, mostly spent on material, for household and clothing items, one of her past times.

Ok, the facts are done, now for the boring breakdown of how my usual holidays go. Of course your petrol will depend on how far you go, and how long at each place. Most were pit stops for the night, or 2 nighter to rest up, if driving for 2 days, and I try to keep it around 300 kms a day, so a slow ride indeed, with few exceptions.

Longest drive is less than 500 kms, pit stop in pak chong, about ½ way to hua hin. 2 night rest up in HH, as familiarity and food options make it a nice stop over. One night in chumphon, one in khao lak, then 6 nights in kata beach, phuket. Then the opposite, via nakhon si thamarat, to visit a friend, or I would of just repeated the same journey down. One night to kill, as her friend was working, then one night to hang out with friend, which added to hotel, as booked her a room, since didn’t want her driving, and allow more time to spend with us. Then back to driving mode, one night chumphon, 2 hua hin, 2 in Bangkok, resting and some business, Ree shopping, me to the chiro for adjustment, and a few dvd’s. sadly, poor selection, as I usually walk out with 10-20, excellent quality, if not, return next time for exchange. This time, just 6 worth buying, plus a music dvd for friend in states. One non play return for exchange.

Chumphon (thong wua laen beach), is a decision stop, if beach is nice, sometimes a short week there, but little stormy of both sides this year, so not much actually beach time. Weather was decent, little breezy, explaining rough surf, and little rain, not enough to be concerned about. One aspect of my out and abouts I’ve been very lucky about. Usually 3 weeks in oct, and 10 weeks mar/apr/may, which is nice, as weather is usually good, and prices still low season, as just prior or after the price jump for real tourist/high season.

Hotels, high end, Sugar Palm at kata, can’t recommend it enough, via sawadee site, 950 inc brekkie buffet w/omelet station, and good selection. Low end, NK, 400 baht, excellent value, no brekkie, but nice rooms, with 3rd floor balcony, one street back from Mekong, with decent view, walking distance to everything necessary. Bangkok was a different hotel than my usually 600 bahter. Pumped it up to 900, again sawadee, nice location, near river, with no view, unless top floor, and guessing view is nothing special. But very comfy room, w/nice pool. Easy access to expressway, so maybe new digs for me, though I really don’t stop or need to be in bkk anymore, except on return leg, for a little chiro adjustment. Only the Sugar Palm and Cha Ba Chalet in hua hin included breakfast. Sugar palm was an option, 100 for 2, great value, as others offered the option, but I passed on. Only khal lak room had fan, 400, ac would have been 600, I think, but it was late, sun going down, and overcast all day, so not needed. But ac was needed on past visits.

Food, rarely do we spend more than 500 for a meal for 2, and we eat good. But non alcohol drinkers. Along with the buffet in phuket, which is a pig out, holding me over till dinner. We also travel with water heater, for morning coffee when not available, or even if is, and not to our liking, and Ree likes her noodle soup. I will also travel with P & J, as I am addicted, and usually get some ham and cheese in HH, as the bakery there makes some nice rolls. Since my deli/sandwich shop made the mistake of overcharging Ree one day, I no longer give them my business, make it myself now. So in room snacks are taken care of, and usually a nice meal out, if breakfast is not provided, I’m a lite morning eater, bakery and coffee will do me fine till a good feed. Then that P&J or H/C comes in handy for snack, or anything else full of sugar or oil/salt that might be around the room. If seeing something interesting, another meal or two out never hurts.

A short holiday doesn’t need to be expensive, and if not driving as much as this trip, petrol cost will be lower and plenty of inexpensive digs to be had for R&R. Just something about kata beach that draws me there twice a year, each time there, I seem to spend less beach time and wonder if I will return. Then of course, a month before the next break and out and about, I can’t wait to get there, so the cycle continues.

Phuket is obviously a longer drive, and unless utilizing the beach, no need to go that far. Especially if just like looking at the beach and not swimming. Lot’s of places closer providing the beach view, if all you need.

Enjoy your travels, whether far or near, high or low end. Take care, as we always see at least 3-5 accidents every trip.

as mentioned, a monthly report, as previous ones will follow, but not much will change beside the constants of previous reports, and a one week added expense. for future reports if not on this forum, refer to (though presently, a dupe of what is on this post(:

phuket was busy in a couple aspect, but dead in others. the beach seems to be getting busier every year, which is a negative for me, but great to lounge around and watch the activity. they have water sports, which isn't intrusive, jet skis are available, but no takers, no a big surprise with the bad press they have received, though i've never noticed any arguements in the past, indicating any scammer, also means it doesn't happen, i just haven't noticed, also have a parasail boat, though priced quoted, i can see why both services are under utilized. the beach is one of the nicest, for major tourist area, though does seem to be getting little rougher surf lately, to the joy of the surfers, which there a quite a few now. they can manage a good 10-15 second ride now, and a little bit of caution, as surfing is not partitioned off from swimmers, but have yet to see a mishap. they really should give surfers the center o the beach. you get 2 nice wave breaks here, and easily can get past both for still waters, with exception of this trip, it was little rough for me, a first time where i didn't go in much.

kata beach, phuket, as far as crowded, no at all, the only business and restaurants doing well, were the business savvy one, offering good value, or off season discounts. the rest going for the first/one time kill, were void of customers. i only have a couple favorites, same as udon, that get my repeat business. since i've been there so many times, kata is the place for me, and with all destinations i go to, usually park the car and everything in walking distance. i don't even bother with patong, avoid it like the plaque. use to take a day outing, see what's new and cruise the lower part of the island, with some nice viewpoints, but haven't lately, more just R&R trips. though if 1st time visitor, definitely go out and about for the day at least, some nice views from few hilltops.

as far as my pit stops, they are just that, with a few couple day rest ups. i've been to the same areas over and over, and long stays at least once in each. as mentioned, chumphon is nice when the beach is cooperating, a short week there is very relaxing, along with khao lak, stayed there for short week prior to tsnami, a very nice beach area, though definitely on the high end of pricing. one place i never liked, krabi. i think it is one of the most overrated and overpriced places in thailand. and apparently i'n not alone in my thinking, it was beyond dead. there were more people in one restaurant in kata, than i saw in all of ao nang area of krabi, which surprised me, but then after a search for a nice meal, it was all self explanatory. if i thought it was a joke when i stayed for a short week the 1st time there, the pricing is totally ridiculous now. even the swenson and mcD chains have 'tourist menus', quite a difference in pricing. all venues, with few exceptions were empty, which even surprised me and beyond my negative attitude expectations. so it's not just me.

if possible, time and fiances, everyone should get out and about, a little research, and you can enjoy some nice R&R, or if into nature and bit more athletic than myself, a lot to be seen and done. no need for long trips or expensive trips, as a wide range of options are available, close and not so close. enjoy.

even if you have kids, i find the school breaks the best times to go, the weather is still good, and pricing usually jumps considerable nov 1st, then drops considerably mid march, with the expected exception of songkran, where some areas go back up a tad that week, though easily avoided, depending on your location. i stay clear of places that are a little bit more logistical to get to, mainly the outer islands, the logistical reason, i also like my car with me, and proximity to a decent hospital, in case of an oops, or a snake bite, which isn't the concern it used to be, as Gem doesn't travel with us anymore.

have fun, be safe. 8-)

ok, follow up to monthly expenses, as thought, no major changes, even though out and about. simply subtract the hotel, and bring petrol down to 2500 baht, decent average over last year, though in the constants, one a bit lower, car insurance, no claim discount brought it down from 1666 a month to just shy of 1200 a month. the rest is about the same, adding in the week i was here in udon for food, and not much changed. actually making it possible to be out and about all year, if avoiding tourist areas at high season, and keeping total expenses at 50k a month, not bad if on permanent holiday. though living out of hotel doesn't interest me, but for newbie, nice to know possible for first year if wanting to see most of thailand.

ok, the numbers, minus hotel, and adjusted petrol.

food...............................15303
petrol..............................2500
electric............................2045
dvd's................................700
misc................................500
total variables...................21048

Constants
rent.................................4000
vehicle insurance.................1200
medical............................1666

Total Monthly Expenses.........27914

some observations, my appetite again off a bit. 10 meals provided by hotel, 6 pig outs, 4 lite brekkie, so if adding 2000 for that and little things, still under 30,000 baht a month. the usual mix of thai/farang, in room/house snacks/meals and restaurant dining. a good estimate. will do for nov/dec at least, but nothing really seems to be changing. again, link for previous months above in 1st post. for the lazy, i will take the liberty to copy and post a couple things, expenses of others, that i don't incur, but you may. you will notice, i'm not a sports fan/tv/cable, with few exceptions, heavy drinker.

though this month/week did see me at 652 a couple nights, passing my usual 3 large and 200 baht bills. 500 one night and 2000 baht when the Phillies won their first game, some damn idiot kept ringing the bell

if a boring couple who gets out a bit, but not heavy drinkers, you can enjoy life here for 30k a month. less if wanting, much more if more perks. enjoy. 8-)

for those curious, it took 50 units of electric to run 15 cubic refrig for 3 weeks. only thing on in house while out and about. everything else was unplugged, so no stand by on any electronics, all off. ++)(*

some expenses, from the original thread that others budget, as i mentioned, simply a lazy sh*t, and non sports/tv/cable, just my music, comp, dvd's.   since i didn't get bill yet, did mention too lazy to go to post office box, but expenses missing phone/internet, which the total for both is less than 400 baht monthly. now, back to the rich folk who actually have a life and hobbies.

below some copy/paste, no names, so hopefully nobody offended, and from a public forum, so accessible to anyone. but some others' thoughts and bills that i don't incur.
If it helps, in addition to LA's expenses I include these in my monthly budget.

UBC 1,500
Internet. 1,200
Car Ins. 1,420
Car Tax. 500.

Other than that my monthly outgoings are similar, just spent differently
One should remember that if you are moving here, there are setup costs,Security deposits(that frequently are kept),the cost of a vehicle with all its maintenace costs etc.etc
My son goes to Bosco. 1st grade cost was 20,500 for the year (1st term 12000bt, 2nd term 8500bt), not including English classes on weekends (1.5 hr Sat/Sun) approx 4000bt. My daughter will start pre-school (primary) and enrollment was 11,600 for the first term, the second term should be less
I am renting (in Romien) - 3 bed bungalow - 5,500 a month
Electric - hot season - 1,500 a month (use 1 aircon at night only, 1/3 wall fans in day - "winter" reduce by 500 baht for lack of aircon use)
Water - about 200 baht a month (but free for last 6 months.... :D )
Cable - 350 a month
Internet/telephone about 900 a month (590 for ASDL, balance calls)
Waste disposal - 20 baht a month
Car - 12,000 a month (over 4 years, would reduce to about 8,000 if I had over 7 years)
Petrol is probably a baht or two dearer a litre than BKK, but tends to get slightly more expensive out of main towns.
On top of this yearly stuff like medical/car insurance but I guess that is pretty similar anywhere in Thailand.
The difficult bit is when you come to food/entertainment. Here you can spend as much/little as you like depends on how you like to live & only you can guess that.
Beer in a bar is about 50-90 baht a small bottle, depending upon what variety you drink & which bar.
Cheaper at Night Market/UD Town & cheaper still 7/11 or a Supermarket.
Falang food, depends what style you want. British "pub grub" is good at The Clock & about 160/180 baht a serving. Most other places are going to sell you a serving for between 100-200 baht, depending what you want. Thai food from 20 baht for roadside to about 120 baht for a good quality restaurant.
That was kind of you to share. 38,767.52 Baht/mo as a married man after the initial setup.

So far we have estimates for a married man(after the initial setup) of
35,000/mo
27,000/mo
35,000/mo
40,000/mo
20,000/mo

electric unit cost less than 4 baht, i use around 500 a month, for 2000 baht bill. meter in own name with no landlord surcharges, so should run about 200 baht for 50 units, as part of the bill. that's total charges, electric/service charge/vat. last months bill was 2044.89 baht for 537 units

service charge?...1414.12
actual electric......496.99
VAT..................133.78

pay the bill just after 1st of month, so actually bill for september. 1 ac set at 26C low fan, does downstairs, run about 12 hrs a day, same ac in bedroom, rarely use lately, 2 frigs, 15 and 5, small one unplugged and defrosted while on vacation. use for beverages, non defrosting, so defrost and let sit while out and about. couple computers and tv's on 12 hours a day, minimal microwave use, hot water, basically coffee daily. water pump for shower/wash/dishes, no lawn watering, city water, so no pump to bring up from well. gas cooking and bbq, 2 bottles of gas last a year, less than 300 each. old house, more usaage, average about 3000 a month.

actually the glass was fairly inexpensive, it was the metal work holding the glass that was more expensive. the builder installed the usually wood / glass stutter type windows. then i redesigned the one side to an all glass wall, 3 sections about 9ft/3m each, half wall plus. each section was 2 piece connected with clear material, so looked fairly seemless. this was done long time ago, 6 yrs and only cost 17 k total.

Image

then inside i added glass doors to partition main room from dining/kitchen area, along with changing wood entrance door from wood frame to metal/glass. one cost 10 k, the other 14k

there are a few around town that will do, try to get reference. i found them by shopping, when i saw a shop that had nice glass work, i asked where they had done. i wouldn't use same again, as personnel changed, and after the guy that I dealt with left, it was hard to get a hold of them, as the front now needed 'adjusting' afterward, but found a guy to fix for 500 baht, as he was installing glass/doors at a neighbors house. not sure what the pricing would be now, plus a lot more prefabs window sets available now, as back then.

I use to run on a budget of 2000 baht a day after paying the rent, internet, electric etc, this was plenty, especially as I was living in Ban Nork. But I should imagine 1000 baht a day after expenses is enough here, depending on your lifestyle.
