Thought I would bring this to members attention. Its a recently introduced scheme to provide health , death and pension benefits to all members of the community regardless of employment . It is available to all Thai citizens between the ages of 15-60. It costs just 150bht per month and currently the govt is contibuting 50bht pm to it , so nett to you 100bht .

The leaflet explains most of the details but the main are that you get 200bht per night for hospital stays, the doctors and medication are already covered under the 30bht scheme.There is a death benefit of approximately 80k and a pension is payable at age 60.There are of course many if's and buts which it is impossible for me to list here.Payment can be made at any govt office, Thai bank and many other places.

To me this takes a lot of worry off my mind as although my wife is covered by her own social security, her teen age son is not. So I have signed him up. Anyone whose wife or step kids don't have any cover, would be well advised to investigate this scheme .

Only applies to children that have a SS number.

SS # for kids is easy to get, know a couple on disability that receive bennies, and never been to states. done thru embassy via/or ss office in manila.

Not an expert on the rules, can be found at ss,gov. Knew of one individual that thought adoption would get the SS#. Eventually immigrated to US in order to meet the requirements. Easy to get if you qualify;o)

don't know how to 'if adopted', though will find out, eventually, when my terminal illness of 'old age' gets closer to bbq time, i'm sure someone would love to be my kid, and receive bennies for 15-20 yrs, after i crap out. US gov't loves me so much, i can only repay the favor, trying to be fair :lol: :lol: :lol: .

know a couple others, one born here, one in states, got ss # here, just in case dad craps out, both never been to states, but not adopted.

Sorry but I know of an individual that applied for his adopted children at SS Manila and was told cannot unless children immigrate to US. US citizen Thai wife and children. Back when I researched it, adopted children in Mexico and Canada were treated differently than other foreign adopted children. Things change so always worth a look.

Child born to a Thai mother and U.S. father and born in Thailand is a US citizen and eligable for a SS#, as they are a passport. Adopted and stepchildren must reside in the U.S. (as well as the Thai wife) to obtain a SS#. When my wife and I first went to the U.S. in 1975 a social security card and a green card were issued with the immigrant visa.

I can ad a little to this. If you are american and retired and collecting SS payments and you have a child whether yours or adoptive (? pretty sure on adoptive) (s)he can collect up to half of your retirement benefits til (s)he is 18 years of age. Not retroactive, but about 6 months prior of registration with the SSA in Manila. All can be done over the phone as long as (s)he has the paperwork done prior at the US embassy, so already has a passport and SSN and a CRBA. So its important to do this within the first 6 months of birth or adoption.

You can search the SSA website and get hints to this, but no form to print and fill out, must call Manila, and good luck with that! I just went thru this and it takes 3 or 4 months before you see or hear anything. The key here is being RETIRED and Collecting your retirement benefits! So you need to be 62+

As far as Wife nothing! Well unless you take her to the states and stay for 5 years.........

Ok, back to original post - does anyone know how much is the pension provided by this 150 baht a month scheme? Also, if death benefit is actually 80,000 baht you would actually get back more than you would ever pay in. I assume the 200 baht a day while in hospital is like sick pay when you cannot work.
Also worth considering for all your 'dependant' in-laws - If you can offload your moral obligation for 100 baht a month it could be a price worth paying!
