I always thought that it was the natural American pronunciation to add the 'r' in Udorn and the English pronunciation that lost the 'r.'

The Thai word อุดรธานี equals, อุดร (Udon) / ธานี (Thani). The final consonant in อุดร is ร (raaw reuua). When translated to English the ร (raaw reuua) is pronounced as the letter "R". In some instances, such as the word Udon, when a Thai word ends in final consonant "ร" (R) it is pronounced as the letter (N) "น" (naaw nuu). It might be that English speakers (probably American servicemen) just kept the "ร" (R) sound in the word and pronounced it Udorn based on the English transcription.

Thai words can get complicated in pronunciation with the changing of the sound based on the final consonant of a word. A prime example of this is when words have a final consonant of the letter (L) "ล" (la ling). According to Thai usage the (L) sound is pronounced as an (N) "น" (naaw nuu). That's why ball becomes ban, bill becomes bin, Global becomes Globan and Central becomes Centran.

Ubon as in Ubon Ratchathani often spelt Ubol (especially on the old buses). Apple and Appen, Bhumibol (spelling) and Bhumipon (speaking).

I always wanted to open a bar next to Mr Tongs called Pumpkin.
Tong was a good bloke. A fine host. He was off his head but knew how to have fun. Me and Wazza did a few lock ins at Tongs when he was opposite the Complek. Happy days.
