and at the end of the day, people will go to try it themselves so

My wife opened a shop 3 weeks ago. Usual corner shop type. The shop across the road closed because after paying rent and bills he was making less than minimum wage, so my wife started up (at our house). House used to have shop at front so very little needed doing, just redecorate and some new electrics.Seems to be doing quite well and taking about 3000 baht a day, plus currently selling rice by the sack - at about 25% profit - no wonder those rice merchants are rich! But long, long hours and harder as i am back in the UK, although family members help a bit.

Main concern is that she is doing well enough that someone will open again at the old shop - usual problem then, not enough customers to share and everyone makes nothing or peanuts.

oh my goodness, even the restaurant racket

not only would you truly need to enjoy your customers

but be willing to work for break-even rates :shock:

yep about the sum of it. I hear rents of 30k+ now days , people say only 1000b a day. well at 30b profit on a beer that means 33 bottles of beer sold to cover rent, then staff 3 , another 33 bottles sold, now move on to electric , beer fridge, bags of ice ect , there goes another 10 bottles.. so lets call it 80 bottles a day ***** . of course a year later your compressor goes on the fridge ,some fans need replacing, your sound system packs up. someone keeps ripping the toilet seat off, a couple of chairs gave up , some floor tiles have cracked and most of the light bulbs don't work, buy new mops and buckets , new glasses as pissheads keep breaking them. got to get a guy in to fix your sign as it don't light up anymore.... and why am I doing this, firstly to get a ROI, and then maybe make some money :lol: .
saying that it is possible, just hand out free Sambuca all day and night and hope some big spenders turn up.. again :lol:

That was Thai with Thai, I can only guess at the nonsense a farang has to go through when opening a business & then trying to keep it running. I can imagine the landlord puttering past on a scooter everyday then saying "hey farang, you have customer, rent next month +500%"

I drove past the old Bookhouse overlooking Nong Sim & that's derelict & covered in weeds. I remember her saying she only moved because the greedy landlord put up the rent sky high which is obviously good Thai business sense, no rent being better than some rent
