I found George to be a good host too , a friendly chap unlike many farang bar owners in Thailand who seem to think that you've just enterred they're empire uninvited and make you feel about as welcome as the bubonic plague and then wonder why they got no customers and blame it on the locals etc ....

Another excellent host was Dean at the Monkey Bar.He always had time for a chat with you even though he was busy on the food side.

while i suppose technically it's not a bar, that thai fellow who runs the beer stand inside central at food park always has a huge smile on his face
and seems generally enthused with his new enterprise. 70-90 baht per large bottle can't beat them prices. i'm not against buying a few complimentary
lady drinks and leaving a 100-200 tip for a friendly lass at a more traditional bar, but those places you can recommend are few and far between. :?:

In my opinion the best host (past tense)of a bar in Udon has to be Justin of Aussie bar fame... there have been other nice guys such as the original Steve... Harry of Harry's Bar... Jan that followed Justin into the Aussie bar... But for sheer entertainment valve it has to be Justin... Always a warm welcome... He would go out of his way to help you...an all round good egg... :!:

Justin certainly made it a fun place to be. Seems like so long ago.

Don't really have a favorite bar anymore -- especially since I stopped the beer
.....can identify with that, though was never the bar enthusiast. 652 was the only 'watering hole' I frequently visited, but regulars soon learned the host wasn't all he pretended to be, which I discovered last I think, since not extreme regular.

Hosts, a different story, followed Steve & Mali from venue to venue, one, the Clock being a bar, probably drinking more pints there than anywhere. Jeremy and Nok, of course, can be your favorite without liking the propietors.........and that other guy who went 'mental', over on my favorite soi

Seems the hosts dictated my dining choices. When management changed, so did my visiting said venues, plus way out of town now. Only stop in out of necessity, and social at sis's / Carrot Shop, as Saturday school run brings us to town.

I always enjoyed the Irish Clock for a mid-afternoon beer when Steve & Mali had it.

These days if I can even be bothered to travel the couple of miles into town then the Sports Bar gets my custom, Steve and Nung are excellent hosts. The Country Bar, across from the City Lodge, is also a favourite for er, shall I say, the hospitality of the staff.

In the good old days, Brian's Bar in the original soi farlang was my preferred afternoon watering hole, not only was/is Brian a great lad but the regulars were a good bunch. I agree with previous comments that Harry, Steve, Justin and Jan were all fine hosts.

justin was ok if you learnt quickly not to react to his tales with anything other than humor & laugh off everyting.

652 bar owner was a riddle wrapped in a enigma. he sure did make a big deal about why he called it 652 but somehow pathologically wouldnt divulge anything as if it was some kind of hold over you.

the best little bar for me was a little bar virtually over the road from aek. he was a british chap & he sure did have a couple of nice girls in there, pat &her sister were particularly welcumming. pat was quite cute too. the last i seen of her was around soi falang.

Hi General Mark... I salute you sir Imageand welcome you to the forum... A bar over the road from AEK Udon....? I remember about 3 years back someone did try and open some sort of business around that location... it had a big tree straight outside...but to me it looked like a guy and his misses trying to sell "falang" food... never seem any "pootang" and it was only open about 3 months... always looked very empty...Not the best location away from the other bars... :!:

Never been into the 652 bar so don't know the story of the name... I had assumed it was some obscure cheap firewater... maybe you can enlighten me and others that don't know too... :?:
