Re Bow bells. Some might be interested to know how far the bells can be heard ringing , apparently not so far as they used to be because of development and pollution has muffled the sound, so now it is a very limited area .

I was born in Charing cross hospital, so maybe a cockney .... but never lived there. South London or commuter land until 18, then returned to the midlands, home of my fathers ancestors. My mothers family where originally huguenots from Belgium, making my mum about 12.5% Belgian.
Have lived in 4 different countries, and i am an accomplished miscegenationist .....

Sorry Trubrit for missing out on a bit of information, uyes you are correct the Bells were not sounding but according toi my MOTHER who is still aliver, wshere I was born was certainly if they were ringing would have been in the sound of them and as far as she and the rest of my family are concerned with the exception of my brother ( Amersham ) we were all born in the sound of Bow Bells .
Historically as you so rightly pointed out Bow bells were not ringing , and as for Barts, where all my family trained babies were still born there during ,before and after the war. I was not born in a hospital in any event OK.
Amazing how a person who posts little can be so adamant that they are correct , when in fact there are still people who claim to be Cockneys even though those damn bells have not rung for over half a century , it is location and in any event you would not hear them now too much bloody noise .
Now TB whewre the hell were you born, not answering shows a little deceit

Australian. Melbourne - Western General Hospital - Teddy Whitten drop kick from the Western Oval.
I had a couple of old uncles, empire types, long passed, who always insisted that they were British and that being Australian was for blacks. They even barracked for the Poms in the cricket.

Sorry KP you may be a Londoner but you weren't born within the sound of Bow Bell( The church of ST Mary Le Bow). The bells were rang in 1939 to announce the start of WW!! and along with all church bells remained silent during the whole war, only to be rung in case of invasion , which of course never happened. In the case of Bow Bells the church received extensive damage during the blitz in 1941 and the bells were smashed on falling to the ground, ending up being melted for making armaments .In 1956 a project to recast some new ones was started and were refitted when the church was rebuilt and opened to the public in !961. So during this time 1939-61,using the sound of the bells as a marker of a true cockney, there wasn't any .On top of this the hospital where I was born, Bartholomews located on the corner of City rd And Old st , also received a direct hit completely reducing the wing where I was born to a load of rubble, when the hospital was rebuilt after the war there wasn't a maternity ward included , in fact to this very day there is not a maternity hospital any where in the area considered to be within the sound of those bells . Therefore technically there are no "cockneys born after 1939.I lived in Farringdon Rd which adjoined St Pauls which is right alongside, throughout the war years and as a kid played in the ruins along with all the other urchins of the time before it was finally boarded up to prevent entry .
