Soi Saphan Fish and Chips, rather tasty, as mentioned, not sure if serving cod yet, as local supply isn't that good. The Dory was quite tasty and cheap, as I had it a couple times, and I'm not a fried fish fan, so damn tasty if I went back for more...... ++)(*

One of the only things I miss is real chips like the Italians make. Shoestring fries just don't do it for me.

The best chips I have ever had were in Belgium. I had them from different towns but superb chips every time but I never enjoyed the mayo that came with them.
I would never in a million years associate Italy and chips so I live and learn.

When I was growing up I only associated the Italians with fish & chips and football. My local was Macari's then there was Borza's, Fuco's, Fusciardi's then obvious names like Mario's, Luigi's, Antonio's etc. The Italy connection goes back to the 1800's I fink. Some Italian on a US bound ship jumped off in Cork, headed to Dublin and began selling chips from a cart outside a pub and it ahem, mushroomed and led to an influx of Italians jumping on the fish & chip bandwagon. I think they also settled in Scotland and northern England but maybe not so much in the south.

I think I said before (damn this dementia) best chips ever were from a Chinese takeaway in Toxteth, Liverpool. Enough to feed a family for 50p... Just beautiful!

mainly coffee shops and ice cream parlours in the south..there would have been some around though no doubt, it is unusual, but in todays world its The Chinese and Turkish that do a lot of chippys.

You certainly get massive portions on Merseyside. When I was growing up there were a few independents as well as the Chinese but there was also a chain of chip shops called Golden Sunrise which all appeared to be run by blokes from Cyprus! In fact the chippy in my village is run by a Cypriot and very nice they are too!!

oh yes, a really good bloke too! All the Turks round here are cab drivers, paying silly money for taxi plates too!!

mine(who has cypriot roots) also does kebabs, most handy.

Mickey in my village does a nice Kebab as well, especially with keftalia sausage. Nice pizza too!

When I lived in Kent, around Ashford and Hythe, in the sixties, there were plenty of fish and chip shops around. Can't say where the owners came from, always assumed then that they were Brits. I was young then and did not pay much attention.
