Popped into the '99+1' bar yesterday afternoon for a swift half (x4 ;)) while the family were shopping in Central.
...handy location and the Thai bloke behind the bar (owner?) seemed a decent enough host.

I noticed that Fuzzy Kens place across the road seemed to be doing a roaring trade. I never hear people mentioning Fuzzys bar much recently.

Fuzzy Kens has been around longer then most Farang Bars. Might just be the oldest with the original owner. What makes Fuzzy's unique is you are sitting right on a main road watching what is more likely better then what's on TV. Plenty of street activity going on.

Never been into the 652 bar so don't know the story of the name... I had assumed it was some obscure cheap firewater... maybe you can enlighten me and others that don't know too... :?:
I'm guessing the General won't know the mystery of the 652 name Sabs, that was the whole point really. James (ex owner) would joke about people always asking him about it but there were things in there that made you want to ask about it, deliberately IMHO. **

James did tell me it was the last 3 numbers of a lottery ticket that he bought which won the jackpot in the New York state lottery but I suspect he was telling porky pies! LA might have an idea of the real reason?

I really liked 652 bar and James despite his mind games regarding the name. :D

Oh and it having the worst pool table in the universe, EVER!

Yep the whole 652 thing was a complete pith take, including the Pool Table. I guess if you didn't understand James' Humour you wouldn't get it. I miss the Lad ++)(*

Was not the 652 bar named after the date the new owner, James?, started trading there, the month of June and the Thai year 52. So a lass told me in there once.

You make it sound like he died. He didn't did he? Guys do drop like flies around these parts.

He had a sign explaining the origin of the name. It was long and I was not so interested at the time.

Wheels up in 10 days time for 8 weeks in LOS
As part of the holiday I plan on spending a few days in UT
Last year I was recommended to stay at the Irish Clock but I understand recently ownership or maybe managership changed.
Anyone used the Clock for food or accommodation recently?

About ten years ago or more there used to be a little bar on soi. "Fi Dang" half way up on the left hand side... These were the days before the Police clamp down of the "pootang"... The girls used to walk the street (Well they were street walkers..! ) and hang around outside for a chat with prospective customers... This little bar was run by a Thai man for Thai men... consisting of little more that a large hatch in the wall and a few planks of wood nailed down as a bench attached below the hatch...You could sit there and have a bottle of beer watching the world most don't see... The atmosphere was fantastic... like stepping back in time 30 or 40 years... The local Thais were all a friendly bunch back then (maybe not so much now)... It was possible to rub shoulders with down to earth Thai guys out for a beer and a some female company... to have a laugh as only likeminded people can do... My Thai has always being good so never had a problem communicating... Always felt safe...Beer was 35 baht a large Leo... It was my favorite bar in Udon... sadly it is now no more... :(

Irish Clock but I understand recently ownership or maybe managership changed..........can't image anything changing much. Trevor gave up lease to a yank, someone else still holds main lease, but the yank would be a fool to change anything, as regulars seemed to be happy. I stop going to that area, just not for me. Plenty of options for accommodations in udon. same price range, less or more, depending on your wants and where to hang your hat. upscale, same, lesser, some with pool, some without. if having transport, RuySuk 2 w/pool for 500 is hard to beat. unless a heavy drinker, may want to stay within walking distance of favorite venues. unless wanting to be on soi 'entertainment' only, then Clock works UP2U, options abound...........

for 800-900-1000 baht or more in Isan, I would expect some perks......... ++)(*

Why should any falang just want to limited themselves to falangs bars... ? :?: Udon is a big city... lift up your skirts young gentlemen and go exploring... If you are a visitor to these parts you are missing out on so much... If from the U.K as I am you have traveled halfway around the world to come here don't waste that effort sitting in a falang bar playing footsy with a second rate floosie... :!: Try the markets and open air Thai drinking venues with their live entertainment... try the Karaoke bars...and Thai night clubs / restaurants... Sitting drinking Guinness in the Irish Clock is laughable as you can do that back home in a similar bar... Soi Sampan... the Day and Night... Nutless Park should be avoided if you want to savor the real flavor of Thailand... Rubbing shoulders with sex tourists, know it all sex-pats and bull shit bar owners who want to be your best friend so you will spend your money in their bars is for losers and the weak of sprit... :!:
