Well, Orchid Hut is not a big fish venue, no plaa shado. have some of the smaller snakeheads (plaa Chon) they have teeth but not lots. plaa jeramid sometimes stocked and they have nasty teeth, so don't put your fingers near their mouth. So far biggest fish i have seen was under 3 kilo here, although I believe a plaa Isok caught last year was maybe 5 kilo.

Most anglers are still catching fish, although maybe only 1 or 2 kilos a day. Will be restocking during the next week. Now working on making up a menu in english; currently only in Thai. Will post some sample items later.

Just an update, fishing still fairly good, caught about 25 fish today; fish have not minded the cold weather. We are closed on Saturday as there is a carnival/festival in the village so roads will be blocked. other days open. Well, as now back thought it was time for an update. Restaurant and fishing still ticking over. My brother-in-law runs the restaurant with his wife while my wife is off with the baby. Basically Thai food but can rustle up some Farang food with notice.

The fishing has been going quite well, getting customers just about every day and most catching - Pla Nin, Pla Tapien and Pla Nongshan (mudcarp) in the 100-200 gram range. Still plenty of Pla Sawai up to 3 kilo in pond one (saw about 15 on the surface recently, along with a Koi carp of about 2 kilo. We also had a Pla Coho (siamese carp) of 6 kilo out in July. Since then have stocked 100 pla coho in some of the ponds, only small but should be interesting in the new year.

Did my first fishing since getting back today. Starting with a pla chon of 1.2kg that was tangled in a net to stop fish escaping the pond (dinner tonight!) and then caught a dozen small fish this morning on pellet paste; 5 different species, including a nice pla duk of 500 grams (also dinner). So fish are there, although our ponds are not like Sabai Sabai! (hope the floods leave them some fish).

Hope to start some restocking in late October. If i win the lottery, maybe even big ones!

Just an update. Now have a new pricing policy (not sure for how long this one will last).

Pond one (bigger fish) is 80 baht and can keep 3 kilos; fishing is harder but fish bigger. Have plaa Sawai to 3 kilo, plaa nin of up to 1 kilo (caught one of 700 grams today), plaa tapien up to 1 kilo (saw one caught last week nearly at this size), and small numbers of plaa Coho, Isok, Nongshan, and many other species.

Pond two - FISHING IS FREE! just pay 65 baht a kilo for the fish you catch. mainly plaa nin with some plaa tapien and Nongshan. Also a few other species in small numbers. Fish are typically 100-300 grams.

Road to restaurant is now paved. Thai menu only (if anyone wants western food, could be added if sufficient demand.

Some restocking done by family in the last 2 weeks. Usual Plaa Nin for pond 2 (done about once a month). I have stocked Plaa Nai (carp), Pla tin (silver carp), Plaa jeramid (pacu) and Plaa taptim (hybrid red tilapia). Before you get your hopes up, all the fish I personally bought were 2 inches long ... but some sport for next year. My own (wifes) pond is as usual overrun with small plaa tapien; needs a few Pike; pity they cannot live here. Peacock bass? Anyone got a source?

I don't know where Peacock Bass can be purchased here in Thailand but Baramundi (bpla kapong khao) might serve the same purpose for thinning bpla tapien. Bpla kapong khao are quite common in Thai fisheries and I'm pretty sure whoever provided your other species would know where to find them. I'd expect them to be phaaeng maak though. Just a thought.

Good advice Mr. Farmer! Bpla shado are eating machines. They are also my favorite fish to catch in Thailand. Very aggressive and strong fighters. I think Rick needs two shado, a momma and a poppa. Soon he will have luk krok (baby shado) and will never have to worry about Bpla tapien again. :nod:
