The US Embassy Bangkok has asked their Udon wardens to initiate an emergency plan for US citizens in the Udon area. Initially what this entails is preparing a phone tree which will cover all the US citizens who wish to participate. The embassy has your details, however they want a hands on ground capability as a back-up. In the event of an emergency the embassy will notify all individually. However if normal channels are down, they will ask the wardens to help cooordinate. Therefore we are asking you to give us your name, telephone number, email, address. This information can be passed to any warden, there are seven. If you know a warden I would suggest you give the info to him. If not, pick a warden nearest to your area. The wardens and their locations are:

Have you ever seen a US Marine cry?

I remember, long ago, while I was on the USS Whidbey Island and picking up 500 specially trained US Marine counter insurgence forces, off the coast of Nags Head, North Carolina, and setting sail for destinations unknown, until we transited the Straights of Gibraltar. Many of the young Marines were amazed at the sight of the glowing phosphors seas of the straights that splashed against the bow of the ship and that illuminated the leaping, diving dolphins that raced the ship's bow at night. We had no idea for most of the trip where we were headed, and why we took on, so much equipment, and manpower. But, Ronald Reagan was President, and some of the men were getting news from back home that the US Marine Barracks in Lebanon was bombed and attached.

After passage through the Straights of Gibraltar, we docked shortly in Signorelli, Spain. The crew had barely enough time to tie up and get ashore when the base emergency loud speakers rang out that all were to return to ship immediately. We were given orders to sortie to the Eastern Mediterranean and join three battle groups, to do "gator squares" off the cost of Beirut with three battle ships for company. Many of the men were continuing to receive messages from back home and newspaper clippings that claimed we are going in on the beach.

For many of the guys, this was their first tour of duty, and frequently got sea sick as we crossed the Atlantic. They were young, strong, idealistic, and proud Americans who understood the meaning of honor! But, the news from back home was getting worse by the day! Everyone, including the Captain starting showing signs of real alarm. In fact, he ordered me to do something that I promised myself that I would never do, but he was just concerned for my survival when we were to hit the beach. The young guys really had a hard time of it, keeping their emotions in check. You could feel the tension build abroad and almost sense it, as the men passed in the passageways of the ship with their silent, urgent, brisk, stride. There was a sense of urgency and alarm that all were intensely focused on.

All comprehended the gravity of the situation when everyone was issued live ammunition and their weapons. I was order up to the flying bridge fan deck, starboard wing, to practice on the M50. Everyone was walking around with their M16s and ammo belts. The Marines got to work on transitioning the equipment that was stowed away to make ready.

I was on an L&G amphibious assault ship that had an estimated survival time of little more than 20 minutes after hitting the beach. We were now getting more letters from back home that said Reagan was going to send us in. You, could feel the tension mounting in the Ward-Room as we sat down to eat with the Captain at one end of the table and the Chief Petty Officer at the other end. There was complete silence. Things continued to get worse, days later, they flew in the military attaché to the flag vessel on a Sikorsky Seahawk.

The weather was very hot, so some of the men after dinner would go to the far end of the fan-tail to cool off and be alone with their weapons and prayers. I, myself, was terrified, but could not allow myself to show it to the men.

One evening, just after sun set and evening meal, I too needed quiet solitude and prayers at the fan-tail. As I approached, I could only see the back of a very young Marine standing with weapon in hand and cartridge belt over his shoulder. It was getting dark. I walked up to the railing and stood at a respectful distance from the Marine.

He was a young 17-year-old who just completed basic training at Paris Island, North Carolina. He had never been away from home before in his short life. Oh, I can so remember the full moon being up in the night's sky and how it reflexed on the tranquil Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the torment of the young green Marine, as he stood there on the flan-tail. For moments, it was completely silent, except for the sound of the ship's propeller making its way through the water. We were then only two astern; there was no one else.

I was completely not prepared for what had happened next. After approaching the Marine and standing a short distance from him, he turned to me, as someone who was not one of his direct superiors, but of senior rank, and it was heart wrenching to see this young Marine cry. The tears that seemed so natural of a human expression, seemed to challenge everything I was taught about life as a man, and especially my preconceived perceptions of what US Marines stand for. That night, I was taught a lesson that would last a life time. He told me that he joined the Marines not thinking his country would ever ask him to go to war, point a gun at another human, and take his life. Although, I tried my best, I fear that I was of little consolation to this young US Marine, there was nothing I could say or do, at the moment, to change both of our circumstances. But, he taught me what love, devotion, and honor for country meant; and what generation of men just like him, had and were willing to sacrifice to guard and defend our country's laws, democracy, and liberties. I was changed forever.

The next day, while eating lunch in the Ward Room, the ship's sirens whined, and the voice over the ship's intercom, blared "Battle Stations, Battle Stations," "This is not a drill."

And all, without hesitation, did what it means to be a United States Marine. E. pluribus Unum.
