A huge problem for the American revolutionists was that one hell of a lot of American colonists considered themselves to be British and wanted nothing to do with the revolution. Too much at stake for the more well-to-dos. British sympathizers undermined much of the rebels efforts. At that time lots of British people on both sides of the Atlantic considered themselves as one and the same.

Mrs. S has already reminded me that it's Independence Day. During her very first visit to the States she experienced a 4th of July celebration and was suitably impressed. She has no idea of the significance of the event but thoroughly enjoyed the food, family gathering and fireworks. Being exposed to a bunch of patriotic red-necks made a lasting impression. A positive one.
