What did you have for lunch today?

We went to my wife's home village, Phannawutta yesterday. and ate lunch from the local market where one of her cousins works. My favourite was a Phu Thai favourite, corn wrapped in coconut. We also had fried chicken legs, vegetables and a fruit with the name, maak mao. which leaves the tongue with a blackish colour.

Went to wife's noodle shop for lunch and had a spicy noodle dish, also a tad sweet, with the usual pork, etc. All I can say is that it was good and went down well with a cold drink. I'm royally spoiled.

This afternoon, we ate at my favourite Khon Kaen restaurant for lunch, อร่อยเดึด. We eat here once a week. It is just down from the Orchid Hotel and across from a Wat. The lady who is the cook and owner has bright red hair, and is very nice. As usual, I had pork rib soup with vegetables and bean sprouts. 80 baht for two.

Hay Unc, have you tried the Nongmun bakery in Khon Kaen? I think it is near a Mcdonalds but i'm told they have 2 branches now. They do a great Portugese / Macao style Egg Tart for only 10 baht.

Not something I'm real familiar with Khun Noodles. Mrs. Shado can't completely pin them down either. I'm familiar with a steamed coconut dessert (khanom) called takoh (ตะโก้) that sometimes has corn in it but it's not a main dish. Might be able to identify it with a bit more information.

Maak mao, I believe, is also called ลูกเม่า (luuk mao), the fruit is also used for making wine. You can plug ลูกเม่า into Google images to see the fruit.

If this is off base, Phousy656 is gonna have to help us out.

You can also plug in หมากเม่า (maak mao) to see more info. หมากเม่า = maak mao = Antidesma velutinosum.

Here is some info on the khanom takoh (ตะโก้) that I mentioned. Doubt it's the one Uncle T. was talking about though.

Yes love takoh, when in China town London we pick a few boxes up for the fridge as they have them fresh in, sometimes our local Chinese store has them but they just buy from China town on Thursdays and Sundays and sell in their store, but it's rare.

Here are some maak mao/luuk mao fruit that Mrs. S brought back from the village today. The black ones are sweet the red ones are semi-sour and the yellow ones are damn sour.
