Jumong's Korean Buffet

Having passed it on a number of occasions I’ve been curious to try it, but reluctant as I’ve never experienced Korean cuisine. So one day after discussing where to have lunch, a friend and I decided on Jumong’s. Now Jumong’s isn’t your typical buffet were everything is laid out and you serve yourself. I think they call it A volonte (“as much as you like”), the food is brought to your table with more upon request.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was a menu displayed out front. The menu is divided in two sections, buffet and ala carte. After a quick glance I was looking forward to a Korean culinary experience and didn’t think I would be disappointed.

On entering the restaurant we were greeted by a server who quickly ushered us to a table. He asked us if we wanted the buffet or ala carte. We choose the buffet and then off he went and quickly returned with a beverage cart. After serving us, he disappeared again and in no time appeared with the starter dishes. There were four cold dishes: an egg soufflé type dish, bean spouts in a light dressing, Korean style pancake and kimche (spicy fermented cabbage, many variations, an acquired taste).

Next were four hot and freshly prepared meat dishes: BBQ pork, BBQ beef, BBQ spicy pork belly (mild spicy) and lightly breaded fried chicken pieces. The meats were tender and very flavorful, especially the pork belly. Trailing the meat dishes were a small bowl of kimche stew (awesome) and bimibap (steamed rice with bits of veggies & meat topped with a raw egg, the concoction is mixed prior to serving).

The finale was grilled Mackerel and a shrimp & octopus dish in a spicy (hot) sauce, friggin delicious. These last to items weren’t listed on the menu, so don’t if it’s regular offering or something that is varied from day to day.

Anyway, by the time we went through this round I was on my way to a full belly and only reordered selected dishes. The price of the buffet is 199bt, beverages not included. For an additional 100bt you can have all you can drink Chang beer on tap.

The restaurant is clean, A/C and tastefully presented. Our server was friendly and efficient, ensuring are glasses were topped off. Some English is spoken by the staff.

Jumong’s is located between Phosi & Prajak rd (not far from immigration). From the fountain circle heading NW take a right at the appliance store on the corner displaying large red TOSHIBA sign. About 50m on the left is Jumong’s. Parking didn’t appear to be a problem. Hours are 1100-1400 and 1700-2200. In case you want to call ahead: 042-222-159.

Buddy you just made my life in Thailand more enjoyable, I love Korean food...hell the other day I bought some prepackaged spices at Tesco for Kimchi Chigae, a type of Korean soup, also some bulgoi marinade (however the beef I bought was super tuff, like the freak'n cow just got done running a marathon)...thank for the review.
