I think there is definitely a market for faring bars in udon, but maybe not as many as we currently have. My biggest problem is how crappy most of them are though. I'd rather sit at home with a nice drink versus a dirty smelly tiny bar with no customers and no atmosphere. However i'd rather be in a decent bar with a bit of nice music, a nice clean environment with some good banter than sit at home.

yes, if there was a nice little pub with busty waitresses flitting about , and some comfortable seating ( as compared to the average torture-device bar stool) some hot food items available from the grill

i would have no problem spending time and baht there , and suspect many others would as well. i don't really know any place like that (although many new openings i've not yet had chance to visit)

Coming to the end of my 11 day stay in Udon. As a single bloke without the comforts of a house in the town or outside. I'm not that thrilled to to return to my rented room or just have a night in wit a missus to cuddle up to, so try to enjoy a fair bit of night life. Most of the bars I've tried in Day n Night have been a waste of time. I go in reasonably happy and often come out with my ears ringing from having Bulldog or some other new cheesy pop artist at 120decibles then often mixed alternatively with loud Thai music. I like Thai music but not wanted in a western customer bar, Sorry! Especially with some of the girls, ladboys shrieking in my ears or shouting across the bar at 150dbs over that said music. Most of the customers I see around are in their 40's 50's 60's so that type music is lost on them (with the odd exception), just a noise they have to endure when drinking an expensive beer! If I hear classic rock being played when I go past a bar, I'm in, no matter if it's empty! But that's just my taste, I can enjoy Motown, Soul, Punk, Bee Gees type disco, 60's 70's 80's chart, reggae or gentle trance but NOT that crap the girls like to play, and of course you can't tell them!
Nutty park not much better, in some of the bars I've been called in then completely ignored, the girls more interested in FB or candy crush. If I'm paying 80 or 90 bt I expect at least a basic bit of acknowledgment of being alive in your bar. Simply put I go in happy and come out not so, so then my expectations are dampened and I very rarely go back to bars that do this!
I have to say, the bars in Soi farang I have to say have been the best. Always greeted with a hello, Sabi dee Mai?, often the girls or owners, staff or other customers would get chatting and reasonably priced beer in most.

OK, Soi Farang ??? Is this simply the rest of the bars on Soi Samphan you are talking about, such as Beach Bar, Viking Bar, and couple other new ones coming to mind.

If you don't me asking, why Udon for this part of your holiday ??? Do you have a present connection, or just familiarity is comforting? Looking at your pasts post, luckily, not too many, don't see a major reason for Udon. Though I like Udon also, especially the familiarity, and best food town, and easy to get around compared to most other places. Everything in walking distance. But same as a couple beach spots, once there.

Did I just answer my own question, familiarity.

For me, I'd go beachside, Patts, Phuket or Hua Hin if wanting some company, or PKK, Thung Wua Laen (Chumphon beach) for relaxing, sipping and possibly some company.

No personal offence intended as I know a few people who spend their holidays in Udon whilst not married etc , crikey , I could think of so many better places throughout Thailand than Soi Samphan , for the same price I would have spent 11 days in Hua Hin or done a bit of touring

My thoughts, if not living here, mainly Gem's school as only reason for staying, I wouldn't be here. House is on the market, and IF sold, can't see me ever returning.

If not sold, use as a base, but can see me out and about, beach side, and maybe finally seeing some of the mountain views on North side, during right time of year, and away, more than being at the house.

Yeah this old 10'' laptop doesn't have any spell checker and I tend to put everything in one paragraph lol!

Firstly I've been all over Thailand and stayed more than a few days in many places. Been coming here for around 8 or 9 years and I have to say I keep coming back here as it's still the best place for my needs!. You mentioned a few of these.

The Thais always seemed friendlier here to me. Everything including shops, bus station platforms have some English signage. Compared to somewhere big such as Korat this is much more tourist user friendly! You have Nong Khai and Laos up the road, NK is ok for a few days too! Markets like Centerpoint, (get a lot of smiles from the ladies there ++)(* UD town for the ambiance and music. Weekend markets near Nong prajac!
I used to have a girlfriend here so know the city quite well, know where all the small markets are for example motorbike custom parts, (part time hobby) or DIY home shops and wholesale places on the ring roads for bits and pieces, Chinese wholesale cheap supermarkets. Plenty of Guest houses for around 5 to 6k month. And I know a few people, not as many as I did they've all left!
I'll be back in LOS Aug and part of my trip to here will probably include BKK, 2 or 3 days, Pattaya 3 or 4, Hua Hin a week or more (want to check out Cha am this time). Kanchanarburi possibly (do that ever 2 years) KK maybe 2 days. Up here and maybe a week or so in Laos, but mostly here for a month or so!
Wouldn't realy class it as a holiday. More of a place to chill that's not UK and on route to Philippines and Cambodia which when have bad weather, best to to be there!
